Blanket Statements
A data quilt on military defense lobby spending in the United States (2004-2023)
This is one piece on a larger collection exploring how the way data is visualized changes our perspective on the data and the way we understand it.
What appears as a regular quilt, is actually much more. In fact, you’d have no clue it was representing data (just like most companies don’t want you to know how much they spend on lobbying, or attempting to influence government decisions).
The quilt is called “Blanket Statements” because it’s a blanket, i think it’s making a statement, and blanket statements are often broad, generalized statements meant to cover up what’s actually going on behind the scenes.
It’s both a diversion, and an invitation to learn more. If you fall into the latter category, scroll down for the key.
